Bond document, 1777 Aug. 4 (Providence, R.I.)

Bond between two merchants in Rhode Island and South Carolina prior to a trip from Providence, R.I., to Charleston, S.C., during the U.S. Revolution; "Know all men... that we Andrew Breeden of Charlestown [S.C.]... as principal and Paul Allen of Providence [R.I.]... as Surety are... firmly bound unto Joseph Clarke," Treasurer of Rhode Island "in the sum of six hundred pounds...." Breeden, identified as "master of the ship called the Woodcock, is bound on a Voyage with said ship to Charles-town... [with no cargo except] Ballast only and the necessary Provisions for the Voyage.... the said Andrew Breeden [identified as '"merchant at surety"]... shall in all Things during and respecting the said Voyage conform himself to the Rules and Regulations of the... Continental Congress and the General Assembly of this State concerning Trade...;" Signed by Breeden, Allen, and witnesses William Hopkins and William Mumford.
